A Short Story About An Experience I Had As. Very Young Boy
SO MUCH MORE ©️2025/Gregory Perryman
One warm afternoon, when I was very young, I sat on the edge of the kitchen sink, my feet were dangling off of the counter. The sun filtering in through the window, casting off rays that danced across the room. My eyes were fixed on the faucet, where a single drop of water hung suspended, quivering at the tip of the metal spout.
Drip.
It fell into the sink with a quiet plink, followed by another, and another. Each one seemed to hold a tiny universe, catching the light for just a moment before vanishing down the drain. I watched, captivated by their fleeting nature. And then in an innocent way only a child possesses, and I wondered something bigger, much bigger.
“Why was I born a little boy, instead of a drop of water?”
I asked the question aloud, half expecting the drip to answer. But there was no reply. So I asked God.
For a moment, everything around me seemed to pause.
The sunlight felt warmer, the quiet deeper. And in that stillness, I felt a soft, comforting presence, as if the world itself was listening.
In my heart, an answer gently formed, though it wasn’t in words. It was more like a feeling - one that whispered, because you were meant to grow, to love, and to be loved in return.
Drops of water are beautifully delicate, and fleeting. But you? You are a little boy, full of possibility. You can think, wonder, and dream. You can feel joy, sadness, and curiosity. You have a world to discover, one far beyond this drip from a faucet.
And so I smiled to myself, content with that reassuring mystery of it all, with that I turned back to the faucet. Another drop fell, and I watched it closely, now with a deeper understanding.
I was not a drop of water, but a little boy - meant for something so much more.
